Training and other stuff

My other workLike most journalists I have moved on to other areas of work alongside writing and editing.

Training & MentoringI have trained or mentored individuals and company teams in:

What journalists want

Social media marketing

Writing for newspapers

Launching a freelance writing career

One of my most enjoyable experiences was as part of the charity Children’s Express where I led weekly sessions on journalism and pitching for newspapers at a Birmingham secondary school. I was so proud when their work appeared in the Mirror, Observer and Birmingham Mail, among other places.

PR Services

I started a PR agency in 2003 and we continued until 2017. I still work with companies and organisations on PR, copywriting, training and social media. You can see my PR-inspired website at The PR Woman.

My books on journalismI would certainly not recommend that anyone bought these now as they are wildly out of date. However, they were well received with some great reviews. Here’s just one example:

Amazon Review: The Greatest Freelance Writing Tips in the World

“Linda Jones cuts to the chase with this amazing little tome. It’s thick enough to be inviting and it’s small enough to be read on the train. Filled with real-life, practical tips on becoming a freelancer rather than vague ideas you so often find with ‘how to’ books, it’s really essential for anyone starting out. Having said that, I have been freelancing for nearly three years and I am learning a thing or two from it. If only I’d had this when I was a fledgling freelancer, I would have avoided some embarrassing career-lows.

The check-lists are amazingly helpful and, whilst some of the information is obvious, (“check names are spelled correctly”), no-one’s actually bothered to point it out before and you’d be surprised how many writers don’t…

Get this book.”

  • I’ve known Linda professionally for a number of years and was thrilled to be asked to be an expert contributor to As an editor, Linda cannot be faulted. She has a great eye for interesting content, gives good and prompt feedback, supports her writers and engages her readers. I particularly appreciate the way Linda manages to create a good team feeling amongst a wide range of freelance contributors, making us all feel part of the RFT family, even though most of us have never met. Linda has excellent skills in using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, webchats and blogging to engage readers. I recommend her wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a writer, editor, PR or lovely person to work with.

  • Thanks very much for such an engaging and high quality workshop last week, which has definitely made a positive impression on us all! (And keeps coming up in conversation) The press release training was beyond useful and we are now applying it to other areas of our work as well.

She made the subject entertaining and easy to understand with first class practical tips and suggestions, great notes and information to take away.
